The inscription of properties in the World Heritage List has overshadowed the responsibilities set out in articles 5 and 27 of the World Heritage Convention and the accompanying 1972 Recommendation Concerning the Protection, at National Level, of the Cultural and Natural Heritage. Focus on the List has assisted the disproportionate promotion of a selective group of heritage properties, prejudicing the advancement of comprehensive global heritage conservation and management, and contributing to the politicisation of the decision-making processes.

Since 1978, the UNESCO World Heritage List is in a constant process of evolution. On the website you will find an interesting account of documents, programmes, and studies on the composition of the List and trends that should be recognised.

SESSION 1: MONDAY, NOV 08, 14:00-15:30 UTC

The Beyond the List exploration is rooted in understanding the List. We may think of the World Heritage List as static, but it is constantly evolving. Since listing began in 1978, properties of various types and categories have come forward and been inscribed. In this session we will explore that evolution highlighting specific trends and opportunities, particularly toward a balanced and defensible list. >> REGISTRATION / DIRECT ACCESS

The webinar is focused on discussing the roles and incentives for the civil society in identification, protection and management of heritage through a dynamic listing process (WH List+ Tentative List+ the Inventory). >> REGISTRATION / DIRECT ACCESS

 SESSION 3: WEDNESDAY, NOV 24, 14:00-16:00 UTC

This session turns to architectural pedagogy and new areas and modes of documentation to seek knowledge that goes beyond the boundaries of the state and constantly challenges and expands the list of heritage sites, and consequently, the histories they recall. >> REGISTRATION / DIRECT ACCESS

Patricia O'Donnell is the 2021 winner Louise du Pont Crowninshield Award, the highest distinction in the field of heritage in the US. This prize is awarded yearly by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. As a prominent advocate for the protection of cultural landscapes, Patricia is the first landscape architect in history to win this award. She has been founder and principal of Heritage Landscapes LLC since 1987, is a member of FASLA, AICP, ICOMOS, and is actively involved in the OurWorldHeritage initiative for a year. We congratulate her for this great acknowledgment of her many contributions to the field. Her immense knowledge and passion for cultural heritage have made her a deserving recipient of this award, and we are honoured to have her on our team.

Heritage can be expressed beyond grand monuments, ancient shipwrecks or tiny pieces of pottery at the museum. Heritage is also sensorial: the sounds that surround our daily lives, the musical notes of a song, the words of a traditional poem or an interview.

We are making a global call for audio and sound material that represents intangible heritage. Share with the world pieces of heritage from your site that are not always acknowledged.

Until November 21, a special exhibition prepared by the #2021debate Heritage in Conflict team is open to visitors at the Olivetti Showroom as part of the Venice Biennale (Italy). Artworks from photographers, artists, heritage professionals, and activists around the world call for safeguarding of what local communities identify as heritage during and after armed conflict.
